Nondairy Milk Substitutes!!
We are always asked about this one… substituting dairy milk & creams is an extremely easy step to healthy living! There are many options available, and many uses for all. When asked my opinion, I never have just one answer. "Which one do you use?" is usually answered with a battery of other questions "Which do I use for… baking? Coffee? Cereal? Cooking?"

Our new Fav… Thug Kitchen!
OK, we know it's not exactly NEW, but maybe newer to a few of you! Dr. Thug is the head of Thug Kitchen, a site that tries to take the pretentiousness out of plant-based cooking. Vegan diets need not be expensive or exclusive, and we give Dr. Thug big ups for reminding the people that. Here in PR we always get the same reaction...
"Being vegan in the Caribbean must be impossible."
My answers, which through the years have turned from sarcastic to downright snotty, usually go something like this "Yes, it's impossible to eat healthy on an island that grows great fresh food all year long for next to nothing."
I'm not sure when our society (on a whole) decided that huge houses and fancy cars are worth generations of debt, and our bodies deserve "whatever is on sale" and day-old bread, but hopefully we are turning our ways of thinking towards taking care of ourselves and our families first. It doesn't matter if your car is a Lexus or a Honda if you are driving it to chemotherapy, or you don't live long enough to pay it off. Puerto Rico is living proof that no big bank accounts are needed to give your body the nutrition it needs to fight off diseases, viruses, and infections. Hopefully Thug Kitchen is reaching a lot more people with this train of thought as well.

The Elimination of the Pit Bull Ban in Puerto Rico has been Approved
According to Ivelisse Rivera Quinones' article in today's Primera Hora newspaper, the Department of Agriculture's agronomist, Carmen Oliver, spoke negatively on the topic of breed specific legislation (BSL) here in Puerto Rico.
Dr. Ernesto Casta, the president of the College of Veterinarians, also had kind words for the specific breed, and reminded all that any size or race of dog has the possibility to be dangerous if maltreated.

Pura Belpré (1899–1982) es una de las intelectuales públicas más importantes en la historia de la diáspora puertorriqueña. Fue una bibliotecaria de literatura infantil, autora, folclorista, traductora, narradora y titiritera que comenzó su carrera durante el Re- nacimiento de Harlem y las décadas formativas de la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York. Belpré también fue una de las primeras aportadoras afrocaribeñas a la literatura estadounidense.
Por mucho tiempo, Belpré ha sido considerada una ‘pionera silenciosa’, y no creo que haya una mejor manera de presentar y celebrar su vida y sus logros que la primera publicación de un volumen integral que comprende una introducción reveladora y una selección de sus ensayos y cuentos publicados e inéditos.

PUERTO RICO HORSE RESCUE
El caballo es el animal más abusados en el planeta. Aquí en PR es desgarradora de las vistas que hemos visto, y la ignorancia y la negligencia de la policía para ayudar en estos asuntos graves. Mis felicitaciones a estas personas que nos están ofreciendo un servicio aquí en la isla necesita desesperadamente. Estoy segura que están constantemente en la necesidad de fondos, suministros y voluntarios!
The horse is the MOST abused animal on the planet. Here in PR it is heartwrenching the sights we have seen, and the ignorance and neglect from the police to help in these severe issues. Hats off to these people who are offering a service we here on the island desperately need. I am sure they are constantly in need of funds, supplies & volunteers!!

Please join us every Saturday in Viejo San Juan for our local farmer's market! Lots of great fresh LOCAL veggies, plants, herbs, and locally made organic and fair trade products!
While you are there, check out the Walkstar PR Doggie Spot on the grass of the National Parks Service, directly in front of the Norzagaray entrance. Walkstar volunteers their professional pet care to the members of the community since pets are not permitted inside of the building. With water, shade, organic home made treats, toys, and LOTS of hugs and kisses, these pups don't mind if their parents take a few minutes for themselves!

Monsanto en Puerto Rico
Monsanto inició sus operaciones en la Isla para el año 1983 (como sucesor de la empresa Asgrow) y actualmente cuenta con dos plantas: una en Isabela y la otra en Juana Díaz. En Puerto Rico, la empresa se dedica a la investigación de maíz y algodón, al igual que la elaboración de soya para ser consumida en los Estados Unidos.
El pasado 30 de junio, Monsanto anunció que establecerá un laboratorio bioagrícola en el municipio de Juana Díaz para investigar mejores calidades de maíz y algodón. Según el artículo publicado en el periódico El Nuevo Día (11), la compañía invertirá $4.3 millones y creará aproximadamente 45 empleos, datos que la industria biotecnológica del País considera beneficioso para la economía. Luego, el mismo diario publicó un reportaje investigativo (12) sobre las dudas, controversias y repercusiones que tendrá los productos transgénicos en la Isla a causa de los impulsos de Monsanto y la empresa bioagrícola Pioneer Hi-Bred para expandir sus operaciones. En este artículo, muchos expertos coincidieron en que estos productos son tóxicos y causarán graves daños tanto al medio ambiente como a la salud.
Uno de los argumentos que se ha utilizado para justificar la introducción de cultivos transgénicos a los países es garantizar la seguridad alimentaria para los habitantes. En cambio, el Relator Especial sobre el derecho a la alimentación de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, Olivier De Schutter, señaló en su informe (13) que “la agricultura debe reorientarse fundamentalmente hacia modos de producción que sean socialmente justos y más sostenibles”, refiriéndose a la agroecología. Este método busca imitar los procesos naturales del medio ambiente para reciclar nutrientes, integrar cultivos y controlar las plagas sin la necesidad de insumos externos (como los plaguicidas), al mismo tiempo que busca empoderar a los agricultores.

La Rama Judicial is an amazing site which brings laws to the people… word for word. On an island where the active police do not bother to learn what is legal or not, we think this is one of the more important places on the web!
There are also tabs for you to consult a certain case (if you have the case #), a public calander of different courtrooms and their schedules on the island and even a list of all judges practicing in Puerto Rico!
